Outdated Dating Rules

Back in the day, dating was fairly methodical and internet dating wasn't even on the radar. There were rules and many an agonizing hour saw men and women with wrought hands, agonizing over the ins and outs of these rules, lest they lose at the dating game.

As far as the handwringing goes, not much has changed. The rules, thankfully, have! If you're going to stress out about the rules of the dating game, it helps if you have an up to date version of the playbook, right? Hopefully these addendums will decrease your dating stress.

1. No more waiting for the phone to ring, ladies

I've always loathed this long standing rule. It never made sense to me and I tended to ignore it even when I was a teenager. Thankfully, it is no longer expected. Most men are now comfortable with the New Dating Deal. And most men understand that it's just as acceptable for a woman to them or ask them out as it is for the reverse

Men know this Ladies! So that means the ball is in our court, no more excuses. Consider the stress a by-product of feminism. But rather than think of it as stressful, consider the fact that this is liberating! No longer do you need to spend hours waiting for the phone to ring, and your calendar has become much easier to plan.

2. Have sex only when it's right for you

For most of us this is just common sense talking. But it wasn't always like that. Though birth control methods are both effective and relatively easy to get hold of, in some parts of the country the social rules of the dating road aren't quite up to speed.

Times are different. We are educated about just what exactly makes a baby and how to keep ourselves safe from icky diseases. The new rule: be safe and be responsible and do what's best for you, physically and mentally. If you can't obey this rule, you shouldn't be playing.

3. Whose Wallet?

Honestly, this is an area where I'm glad there are no set rules based on gender. Because there shouldn't be. A couple having payment patterns is a natural thing but it should be just that: natural. Factors to consider should include the financial situation of each person in the relationship, who suggested the outing in the first place, or who is feeling sweet and generous that day. We can all wear the pants now, so money matters should have nothing to do with whats in them.

4. The Internet Dating world

Remember when internet dating was in its infancy; a domain for the socially inept and other assorted weirdos? Sure you do; we all do. And that's part of the problem. It's time to let go of any hang-ups you may about internet dating; it's here to stay. There are a lot of people who have at least dabbled in it, so any feelings of embarrassment at meeting someone online can be tossed out the window.
